This story has been updated.
While many of Americans’ favorite international tourism destinations across Europe and the Caribbean have reopened (albeit with fits and starts), Asia has trailed behind and remained largely closed to leisure travelers.
For Asian countries that heavily rely on tourism, the closures have had a massive economic impact. A study by the flight booking company Next Vacay estimates that Thailand’s economy lost more than $13.5 billion last year because of the pandemic.
“Testing and tracking methods across Asia have allowed infection rates to stay relatively low, while their tourism destinations have become some of the worst-hit in the world,” said Next Vacay founder and chief executive Naveen Dittakavi.
That doesn’t mean demand isn’t there.
“[Clients] want to go to Asia again, and it’s restricted,” said John Rose, chief risk officer for the travel management company Altour. “So they’re asking, ‘Hey, who’s open for business now?’ ”

Here’s a look at where Americans can go and what might be on the horizon.
Beginning April 1, Thailand will allow international visitors to enter without testing ahead of their trip. They will still have to follow one of the Kingdom’s three entry schemes and test on arrival.
After temporarily suspending Test & Go because of the omicron surge, Thailand has resumed the program. Travelers must stay at a government-approved hotel on the first day of the trip, where they will take their PCR test and wait for their results in their room.
What to know about going to Thailand right now
As of March 1, visitors are required to take a rapid at-home test on the fifth day of their trip, uploading the result to a mobile app. Test & Go applicants have to provide proof of payment for those nights in advance, as well as transportation from the airport to their hotel, two PCR tests and a coronavirus-specific travel insurance policy covering at least $50,000.
Travel advisers Tom and Lora Chongruk of Escape 2, an independent affiliate of Montecito Village Travel, planned a couple’s three-week honeymoon to Thailand last October. They say that despite the pandemic and restrictions, the couple would be able to have a relatively normal honeymoon. Popular Thai tourism activities such as scuba diving and spas are available, but they may be tweaked for safety reasons.
As of March 15, Vietnam is fully open for travel, ending the vaccine passport program it put in place last November. Travelers 2 and older must provide proof of a negative PRC test taken within 72 hours before boarding their flight, as well as purchase a coronavirus-specific travel insurance policy covering at least $10,000. They’re also required to fill out a health declaration form and download the PC-Covid Viet Nam app to monitor their health for the first 10 days of their trip.

Ahead of their trip, short-term visitors must provide proof of covid-specific travel insurance covering their whole stay with a minimum coverage of S$30,000.

For more information on approved tests, visit the Ministry of Health website.
